Many horses experience occasional soundness issues, while few equines are completely symmetrical throughout their body. However, each horse has its own spectrum of optimum movement, and technology is now available to ascertain whether a horse is biomechanically moving at his optimum
Balance and soundness is key for equine longevity; vets P. Rossdale and R. Butterfield stated in the Equine Veterinary Journal that the objective evaluation of conformation, and its relation to performance, correlates directly to injury prevention. In addition, abnormalities in a horse’s normal movement can mean less extension in the dressage arena, or limited stride length in the jumping ring. Equinalysis’ video-based gait screening can be a useful tool to help promote equine soundness by identifying abnormalities in a horse’s movement, and has helped the following horses: • The leisure horse that knocked its off hind with the inside hind, moving in an imbalanced way and damaging its protective boots. • The show horse with a side-first (lateral) hoof landing, causing hock rotation, a possible pre-cursor to lameness. • The event horse that underperformed, but eluded professional diagnosis and was not obviously lame. If your horse has these, or any other issues linked to soundness and locomotion, Equinalysis screening may be able to help. According to Centaur Biomechanics’ Russell Guire, a specialist who uses the technology, Equinalysis can provide a useful benchmark of the horse's current locomotion, invaluable for practitioners such as vets and farriers in assisting their diagnosis. Equinalysis is challenging YOU to let us help maximise your horse’s performance. Everyone booking a screening between Feb and May 2008 quoting ‘Challenge Equinalysis’ will receive a 10% discount and will also be entered in a draw to receive Mountain Horse breeches, accessories and a jacket from the current range, plus a training session with British-based dressage trainer and successful Grand Prix rider, Markus Gribbe, part of Tony and Sarah Pidgley’s Windsor-based ‘Team Berkeley’. Equinalysis prices now start with an entry module at £95 plus VAT, ideal for remedial farriery. A ‘benchmarking’ or pre-purchase module costs £200 plus VAT, with eight biomechanical measurements including stride length and fetlock hyperextension; the diagnostic module is priced at £275 plus VAT. For anyone with a professional interest in working in this exciting area, or wishing to know more about the role of an Equinalysis Business Partner, an open day is being held on Thurs 10th April at Kilbees Farm Stud (www.kilbeesfarmstud.co.uk) in Windsor, Berks, from 3-7pm.
